ABSTRACT
Objectives: Salivary Glands Like Other Body Tissues Are Affected By The Process Of Aging. Various Histopathological Changes Occur In The Salivary Glands Of Aged Individuals And Relevant Functional Alterations That Results Into Dry Mouth Or Xerostomia. The Current Study Was Performed To Investigate And Compare Between The Possible Anti-aging Role Of Curcuminoid (curcumin) Contra Flavonol (fisetin). Both Are Anti-oxidants And They Were Utilized In This Study To Overcome The Histopathological Changes Associated With Induced Oxidative Stress Aging In Albino Rats? Parotid Glands.
Design: Thirty Adult Male Albino Rats Were Utilized, Ten As An Aging Group (positive Control) And Twenty As Currumin And Fisetin Treatment Groups. Lipid Peroxidation (LPO) Blood Analysis Was Done To Measure The Oxidative Stress At The Middle And At The End Of The Experiment.
The Parotid Glands Were Dissected And Examined Histologically, Immunohistochemically For
NF-?B, Immunofluorescent For Ig-A As Well As Histomorphometrically.
Results: The Histological Results Proved The Anti-aging Effect Of Curcumin And Fisetin, With The Least Degenerative Changes In The Curcumin Group. A Significant Increase In The LPO Level And NF-?B Was Recorded In The Aging Group As Compared To The Fisetin Group (P= 0.015, P= 0.043) And The Curcumin Group (P=0.005, P=0.007). The Immunofluoresent Examination For Ig-A Revealed A Non-significant Difference Between The Three Groups (P=0.541).
Conclusion: Fisetin Has Proved To Be An Anti-aging And Anti-oxidant Substrate In Treating The Histopathological Changes In Parotid Glands Of Induced Aged Albino Rats. However, It Was Lagging Behind Curcumin In All Analyses, Non Significant Differences Between Them Have Been Recorded.
