ABSTRACT
Assessment Of Children Based On Their Behavior Is One Of The Most Important Skills For Pediatric Dentist. The Major Aspect Of Child Management In The Dental Care Is Managing Dental Anxiety And Fear.
Aim: This Study Was Conducted To Evaluate The Relation Of Children?s Behavior With Salivary Cortisol, Alpha Amylase (sAA) Level And Heart Rate.
Materials and Methods: The Study Was Carried Out On Ninety Six Children With An Age Range Of 4-6 Years Old. Children Were Assigned Into Three Experimental Groups (A, B, C) And A Control Group (D). Each Group Consist Of 24 Children. Group (A) Children Visit Dental Clinic For First Time. Group (B) Children Whose Needed Dental Treatment Without Use Of Local Anesthetic Injection While Group (C) Children Whose Need Administration Of Local Anesthetic Injection During Treatment And Group (D) Children Did Not Know The Nature Of The Study. Saliva Sample Was Collected From All Children For Salivary Cortisol (SC) And Alpha Amylase (sAA) Frankel Behavior Rating Scale Was Calculated And Used As An Indicator For Children Behaviour. Heart Rate Was Recorded For All Children. Data Were Analyzed Using IBM SPSS Software Package Version 20.0. Qualitative Data Were Described Using Number And Percent Level.
Results: There Were No Statistically Significant Differences Between Salivary Cortisol (SC) Median Scores And Frankel Distribution For All Groups Except For Group (B) After Treatment (p=0.013). There Were No Statistically Significant Differences Between Salivary Alpha Amylase (SAA) Median Scores And Frankel Distribution For All Groups. The Only Statistically Significant Difference Was Found Between Mean Heart Rate And Frankel Scale Distribution In Group (A)(P=0.001).
Conclusion: There Were No Relation Of Children?s Behavior With Salivary Cortisol Except For Group B After Treatment. There Were No Relation Of Children?s Behavior With Salivary Alpha Amylase For All Groups. There Were No Relation Of Children?s Behavior With Heart Rate Except For Group A (first Visit To Dental Clinic).
