ABSTRACT
Objectives: The Aim Of This RCT Was To Assess The Effect Of Topical HA On Postoperative Pain After MWF Versus MWF Alone In Patients With Chronic Periodontitis.
Methods: Forty Patients With Chronic Periodontitis Having PPD ? 5 Mm And CAL ? 5 Mm Were Randomly Assigned To Be Treated With MWF Surgery In Conjunction With Either 0.2% Hyaluronan Gel (test) Or Placebo Gel (control) Application For 1 Week, Following Initial Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy And Re-evaluation After 4 Weeks. Patient Discomfort Measured By VAS And Post-operative Consumption Of Acetaminophen Analgesic Were Evaluated Daily For 1 Week. Tissue Edema, Tissue Color Values Were Recorded 1 Week After Surgical Treatment. CAL, PPD, PI, And BOP Values Were Assessed At Baseline And 2 Months After Surgical Intervention.
Results: Test Group Showed More Reduction In Average VAS Scores, Acetaminophen Consumption, PPD And CAL During Serial Measurements (especially In VAS Measurements) Without Reaching Statistical Significance. No Significant Differences Were Present Regarding BOP And PI Values (P>0.05). Moreover, Significantly Higher Values Of TEI And TCI Scores Were Revealed In Control Group Compared To Test Group (p = 0.0001).
Conclusion: Hyaluronan Gel Application In Conjunction With MWF Surgery Appears To Improve The Periodontal Surgical Outcome In Terms Of VAS, Reduction In The Number Of Rescue Pills Intake, Tissue Edema And Tissue Color Of The Gingiva.
