ABSTRACT
Background: Forensic Odontology Is Described By The Federation Dentaire Internationale As that Branch Of Dentistry Which, In The Interest Of Justice, Deals With The Proper Handling And Examination Of Dental Evidence And The Proper Evaluation And Presentation Of Dental Findings. This Study Aimed To Investigate And Analyze The Difference Between Egyptian Males And Females In Mandibular Indices Measurements And Mental Foramen Position Using Cone Beam Computed Tomographic Images.
Materials and Methods: Thirty Six Patients Were Included In This Study. They Were Divided Equally Into Two Groups. The First Group Included Eighteen Females And The Second Group Included Eighteen Males. All Of The 36 Participants Were Scanned Using CBCT Scanner Then Six Indices Were Obtained From The Reformatted Panoramic Images Of Each Mandible (superior Index Of Mental Foramen Position, Inferior Index Of Mental Foramen Position, Mental Index, Gonial Angle, Antegonial Index And Ramus Height).
Results: It Was Found That There Was Statistical Significant Difference Between Males And Females Regarding Three Parameters Namely Superior Index Of Mental Foramen Position, Inferior Index Of Mental Foramen Position And Ramus Height However, There Was No Statistical Significant Difference Between Males And Females Regarding Three Parameters Namely Gonial Angle, Mental Index And Antegonial Index. Assessment Of Intra-observer And Inter-observer Reliability Regarding All Linear And Angular Measurements Showed Highly Significant Agreement Between Observers.
Conclusion: Certain Mandibular Indices As: Superior Index Of Mental Foramen Position, Inferior Index Of Mental Foramen Position And Ramus Height Of Mandible Are Rendered As Reliable Gender Discriminators In Forensic Odontology. The Mean Values Of Males Are Higher Than Females Regarding The Superior Index Of Mental Foramen Position, Inferior Index Of Mental Foramen Position And Ramus Height. Certain Mandibular Indices As: Mental Index, Gonial Angle And Antegonial Index Are Rendered As Non-reliable Gender Discriminators In Forensic Odontology. Cone Beam Computed Tomography Is Considered As The Imaging Modality Of Choice To Assess The Role Of Mental Foramen Position And Mandibular Parameters In Gender Determination.
