ABSTRACT
This Research Was Designed To Compare The Efficacy Of Local Irrigation Of Simvastatin (SIM) In The Relief Of The Symptoms Accompanying Pericoronitis Versus Normal Saline Solution.

Materials & Methods: 30 Male Volunteers, Age 18-28 Years Old Suffering From Pericoronitis Were Divided Into 3 Groups 10 Volunteers Each: Group 1 (Control): Where Immediate Operculectomy Was Done, Group 2 (experimental): Who Received Normal Saline Solution Irrigation & Group 3 (experimental): Received Irrigation Of Prepared SIM Solution. Operculectomy Was Performed On The 2nd And 4th Days Post Irrigation For 5 Volunteers Each Time In Both Groups 2 & 3. Excised Opercula Were Examined Both Histologically & Immunohistochemically For Localization Of TNF- & BMP-2.

Results: Histological Examination Revealed That Both Normal Saline And Simvastatin Solution Improved The Histological Signs Of Inflammation With Superior Results Of The Later. The Highest Mean Value Of TNF- Was Found In Group 1 (control) (38.98 7.60) While The Least Mean Value Of TNF- Was Found In Group 3 (experimental) (3.15 1.34) After 4 Days Of Simvastatin Irrigation. The Highest Mean Value Of BMP-2 Was Found In Group 3 (experimental ) (31.95 7.61) After 4 Days Of Simvastatin Irrigation While The Least Mean Value Of BMP-2 Was Found In Group 1 (control) (9.26 1.72). Conclusion: Irrigation Using Simvastatin Solution Was More Effective Than Normal Saline On Both Histological& Immunohistochemical Levels.
