CLINICAL AND RADIODENSITOMETRIC EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF ANTIOXIDANTS ON THE INVESTING TOOTH STRUCTURE IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS

ABSTRACT
Objective: The Aim Of The Present Study Was To Evaluate Clinically And Radiographically The Influence Of Antioxidants (Vitamin C, E And Zinc) On The Investing Tooth Structure Of Patients With Chronic Periodontitis

Materials and Methods: This Study Was Conducted�on 20 Subjects, Suffering From Chronic Periodontitis, Divided Into 2 Groups 10 Patients Receive Vitamin C,E And Zinc (test Group), 10 Patient Didn?t Receive Vitamin C, E And Zinc (control Group). Clinical Recordings (PI And PD) Were Scored For Each Participant In The Study Before And After Non- Surgical Periodontal Treatment.�GCF Samples Were Obtained From Each Patient Included In The Present Study And The Amount Of MPP-8 In The GCF Samples Was Determined Using PCR. Radiographic Assessment For Bone Density Done By Digital Panoramic Radiographs. All Participant Were Followed Up At 1 Month And 3 Months.

Results: The GCF Concentration Of MPP-8 Was Significant Difference On ?mean % Of Change In MMP-8 Between Control Group And Test Group After 1 Month,3 Months With P=0.023 And P=0.004 Respectively. Regarding To Radiographic Assessment Of Bone Density, An Insignificant Difference Between Control Group And Test Group At 1 Month Follow Up Period At P=0.131, But Showed Significant Difference Between Both Groups At 3 Months Follow Up Period At P=0.018.

Conclusions: Vitamin C, E And Zinc Have Potential Role In Bone Formation Due To Its Oxidative Function, It Helps In Decreasing Bone Loss And Increasing Radiographic Bone Density Around Periodontally Affected Teeth.
