ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICE OF MINIMAL INTERVENTION DENTISTRY IN A GROUP OF DENTAL INTERNS- A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

ABSTRACT


Aim: This Study Aimed To Evaluate The Knowledge, The Attitudes And The Practices Of Minimal Intervention Dentistry (MID) In A Group Of Dental Interns In Egypt.

Materials and Methods: A Self-structured Questionnaire Was Distributed To Dental Interns To Gather Information About Demographics Background, Knowledge About MID In Addition To Dental Interns? Attitude And Practice. The Knowledge Questionnaire Covered Three Main Domains: Caries Risk Assessment, Prevention And Techniques.

Results: 146 Questionnaires Were Statistically Analyzed. The Response Rate Was (73%). The Mean Knowledge Score Of Dental Interns Regarding MID Was Fair (60.52%). They Exhibited Good Attitude Regarding MID With A Mean Score Of (84.15%) And Reported Fair Practice With A Mean Score Of (65.33%). Dental Interns Younger Than 23 Years Of Age Exhibited Significantly Better Knowledge And Attitude Scores (P= 0.001, 0.008). Dental Interns Who Attended All Previous Rounds Exhibited Significantly Better Knowledge Of MID (P=0.028). Dental Interns Who Graduated From Sinai University Exhibited A Significantly Lower Knowledge Grade (P=0.033). Dental Interns Who Attended The Fixed Prosthodontics Round Reported A Significantly Better Practice Of MID Than Those Who Did Not (P=0.043). There Was No Statistically Significant Difference Between Male And Female Dental Interns. There Was A Significant Positive Correlation Between Knowledge And Attitude Scores In This Survey. Dental Interns Showed Good Knowledge About Diagnostic Concepts Of Minimal Intervention Dentistry, But They Had Poor Knowledge Regarding Prevention And Treatment Techniques. Recommendations: There Is A Need To Improve The Undergraduate Dental Curricula Regarding MID. Further Studies Are Recommended To Explore The Needs Of Dental Students And Interns In Distant Provinces Of Egypt.
