ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECT OF CURCUMIN EXTRACTS AS ROOT CANAL IRRIGANTS AGAINST ENTEROCOCCUS FAECALIS

ABSTRACT


Aim: The Current Study Aimed To Evaluate The Antibacterial Effect Of Curcumin, Photoactivated Curcumin In Comparison To Sodium Hypochlorite As Root Canal Irrigating Solutions Against Enterococcus Faecalis. Methods: Sixty Extracted Single-rooted Mandibular Premolars With A Closed Apex Were Cleaned, Disinfected And Prepared. E. Faecalis?were Inoculated In The Disinfected Root Canals Which Were Randomly Divided Into Four Equal Groups Each Of 15 According To The Type Of Irrigant Used [group (1): Saline, Group (2): 2.6% NaOCl, Group (3): Curcumin And Group (4): Photoactivated Curcumin]. Samples From Each Group Were Subjected To Microbiological Assessment At Two-time Points; Before And After Root Canal Treatment With Different Irrigating Solutions; To Detect Viable Bacterial Cells Using MTT Assay. Collected Data Were Then Statistically Compared To Determine Differences Between The Tested Root Canal Irrigants.

Results: After Using Tested Irrigant Solutions, Photoactivated Curcumin And Sodium Hypochlorite Showed A Significant Antibacterial Effect Better Than Curcumin And Saline.

Conclusions: Within The Limitations Of The Present Study, The Antibacterial Effect Against Enterococcus Faecalis Of Photoactivated Curcumin Is Comparable To 2.6% NaOCl Regarding Its Use As Root Canal Irrigating Solution.
