ABSTRACT
Objectives: To Investigate The Incidence Of Caries In Pits And Fissures Sealed With A Bioactive Sealant Compared To A Fluoride Releasing Resin Based Pits And Fissures Sealant In Preventive Treatment Procedures In Adult Population Over A Six-month Period.
Materials and Methods: A Total Of 40 Volunteer Patients Who Fulfilled The Inclusion Criteria Were Selected For This Randomized Split-mouth Clinical Trial. In Each Patient, The Two Types Of Pit And Fissure Sealant Were Used. A Fluoride-releasing Pit & Fissure Sealant (Seal-Rite?, S1) Was Placed In One Side, While A Bioactive Pit & Fissure Sealant (Embrace? WetBond?, S2) On The Contralateral Side; Such That The Total Number Of Sealants Placed In All Patients Were (N=80). All Sealants Were Evaluated Using Soprolife? Intra-oral Camera By Two Investigators Who Were Blind To The Material And Not Involved With The Treatment Procedures Used For The Restorations. Data Was Statistically Analyzed Using Cohen?s Kappa And Chi-square Tests.
Results: Immediate And 3-month Readings Revealed 100% Absence Of Caries In Both Groups. At 6 Months, Caries Developed In 8.8% Of Patients In S1, In Comparison To No Cases (0%) In S2. Chi Square Test Revealed No Statistically Significant Difference In Carried Incidence Between Groups.
Conclusion: Bioactive Pit And Fissure Sealant As Well As Fluoride Releasing Sealant Could Be Considered A Valuable Preventive Method To Control Caries In Permanent Molars Over Six-month Period.
