EFFECT OF PREOPERATIVE SINGLE-DOSE CLINDAMYCIN ON POSTOPERATIVE ENDODONTIC PAIN IN PATIENTS WITH SYMPTOMATIC APICAL PERIODONTITIS: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

ABSTRACT


Aim: The Aim Of This Prospective, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial Was To Evaluate The Effect Of Pre-operative, Single-dose Clindamycin On Post-operative Pain In Patients With Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis Treated In One Visit. Methods: Seventy-two Participants Diagnosed With Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis In Their Mandibular Posterior Teeth Were Included. Patients Were Randomly Assigned Into Either Of Two Groups: Clindamycin Group, Where A Pre-operative, Single-dose Of Clindamycin (600 Mg) Or Placebo Group, Where Pre-operative Placebo Was Given (n=36). After 30 Minutes Of Receiving Medication, Root Canal Treatment Was Performed In A Single Visit. Patients Were Instructed To Rate Their Pain Felt After Endodontic Procedure In A Pain Diary At 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 Hours And At Day 7 Using A Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Data Were Statistically Analyzed And The Significant Level (�) Was Set As 0.05.

Results: Both Groups Were Similar Regarding Baseline Characteristics, Including: Age, Gender, Canal-number Distribution, Tooth Type And Preoperative Pain (p>0.05). There Was No Statistically Significant Difference Between Both Groups In Post-operative Pain Intensity Or Incidence At Any Of The Follow-up Time Points (p>0.05). Conclusion: Pre-operative Administration Of A Single-dose Of 600 Mg Clindamycin Does Not Seem To Affect Post-operative Pain Intensity Or Incidence For Patients With Mandibular Posterior Teeth With Symptomatic Apical Periodontitis Treated In A Single Visit.
