ABSTRACT

Introduction: Prediction Of The Mesio-distal Dimensions Of Unerupted Permanent Canines And Premolars During The Mixed Dentition Allows The Dentist To Better Manage Tooth Size/arch Length Discrepancies.1

Aim: To Determine The Combined Mesio-distal Widths Of The Permanent Mandibular Incisors And That Of The Maxillary And Mandibular Canine And Premolars In A Group Of Egyptian Children In Alexandria Governorate And To Correlate Between The Widths Of These Teeth To Formulate Normative Data For The Egyptian Children.

Materials and Methods: This Study Conducted On 200 Egyptian Children With An Age Range From 12 To 15 Years Selected Randomly From Three Different Hospitals In Alexandria Governorate. Upper And Lower Impressions Were Taken. Each Impression Was Poured Immediately By Dental Stone. Mesio-distal Widths Of Mandibular Incisors And Maxillary And Mandibular Canines And Premolars Were Measured From The Study Models Using An Electronic Digital Caliper. Data Were Collected And Statistically Analyzed.

Results: There Was Statistically Significant Difference Between Boys And Girls For The Mesio-distal Width Of All Mandibular And Maxillary Teeth. No Statistically Significant Difference Between The Mean Mesio-distal Widths Of The Teeth On Right And Left Sides For Boys And Girls. There Was Positive Significant Correlations Found Between The Mesio-distal Widths Of Upper/lower Canine And Premolars With The Lower Incisors In Right And Left Sides For Boys And Girls. A New Prediction Equations Were Concluded And Proposed From The Results Of This Study Sample. Conclusion: Due To Sexual Dimorphism Found In This Study Sample, The Mesio-distal Teeth Widths Should Be Measured Separately In Boys And Girls. No Teeth Size Discrepancy Between Right And Left Sides In Boys And Girls. So, If Teeth On One Side Are Missing, The Measurements Of Teeth In The Other Side Can Be Used Interchangeably To Represent The Missing Teeth. Due To The Positive Correlation Found Between Mesio-distal Widths Of Upper And Lower Canines And Premolars And Lower Incisors So, We Can Predict The Mesio-distal Width Of Unerupted Canines And Premolars By Measuring The Early Erupting Lower Incisors.
